The network project PhonArt dedicates its appearance at Belgrade’s Ring Ring Festival 2011 to a vanishing language: Aromanian is spoken by an ethnic minority living in the Balkan region, Greece and Romania. Artists from Croatia, Austria, Serbia and the Czech Republic team up for performances dealing with the lost language. Kunstradio presents a radio mix of the spoken word and sound performances from Belgrade.

PHONART is a European cultural network project, funded in part by the European Union, which started in May 2010 and will conclude in December 2011.

“PHONART is an initiative of the Austrian cultural organization Enterprise Z, represented by composer and performer Mia Zabelka. The other network partners are Mani D.O.O. (Zahra Mani and Karin Schorm), Ring Ring Festival in Belgrade (Bojan Djordjevic) and mamapapa in Prague (Tomas Zizka and Martin Janicek).
PHONART is contemporary artwork that has grown out of sound art into a new and inherently intermedial creative genre combining ancient methods of communication that connect and permeate life and art, transcending specialities and expertise in an age of networking and exchange.”

International New Music Festival „Ring Ring“ Belgrade

“After years of war, UN sanctions, hyperinflation and some before internet allow everyone to hear music from all over the globe, B92, an independent radio station from Belgrade and the only ray of light during the most difficult period, has established Culture centre REX, with the idea that the culture is an essential element for the society to recover. In 1996 in REX, among many other new things, a festival named „Ring Ring“ started its life.
Alternative rock, free jazz, contemporary avant-garde, electroacoustic, experimental and world music are the ingredients of the festival since the beginning, even if there were years in which one of the genre resulted to be prevalent. Since 1996 heroes such as Peter Brotzmann, AMM, Taraf de Haidouks, Rova, Peter Kowald, Fred Frith, Pere Ubu, The Ex, Irene Schweizer, Phil Minton, as well as the well known and bit younger Iva Bittova,  Metamkine, Kimmo Pohjonen, Boris Kovac, Franc Hautzinger, Bratko Bibic have been performing and those who grew up with or in time of  the festival like Lajko Felix, Livio Minafra, Luka Toyboy,  Dave Rempis, Peter Evans and others.
The beauty of the festival is that the audience comes to the concert aware that they will experience something new and thrilling, even if they do not know the artists in advance. This kind of the respectful audience with open ears and minds make the musicians happy as well.”
