Der 1971 in Wien geborene Komponist, Künstler und Musikwissenschaftler Bernhard Gál ist durch seine vielschichtige interdisziplinäre Arbeitsweise in den Bereichen zeitgenössische Musik, Installationskunst und Medienkunst gleichermaßen vertreten. In bis dato etwa 80 intermedialen Installationen und Medienkunstprojekten integriert er Klang, Licht, Objekte, Raumkonzepte und Videoprojektionen zu wahrnehmungsorientierten und oft ortspezifischen Gesamtkunstwerken. Er komponiert außerdem Musik für akustische Instrumente sowie elektroakustische Musik und gibt als Laptop-Musiker selbst Konzerte. Darüber hinaus betreibt Gál die Produktionsplattform „Gromoga“ und leitet die österreichische Kulturinitiative „sp ce“. Gemeinsam mit Belma Beslic-Gál kuratiert er das Festival „shut up and listen!“ in Wien. 2006-07 unterrichtete er an der Universität der Künste Berlin im Fach Klangkunst. Derzeit ist Gal als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Rahmen des interdisziplinären Doktoratskollegs „Kunst und Öffentlichkeit“ an der Paris Lodron Universität Salzburg tätig. Seine Werke wurden in Konzerten, Ausstellungen, Installationen und Radioportraits weltweit präsentiert und auf etwa 30 Tonträgern sowie mit diversen Katalogen und DVDs dokumentiert. Für seine Musik- und Kunstprojekte hat Gál zahlreiche Auszeichnungen erhalten, u.a. The ar+d award, London 2000; Karl Hofer-Preis, Berlin 2001; Jahresstipendium des SKE-Fonds, Österreich 2002; Jahresstipendium des Berliner Künstlerprogramms des DAAD, Berlin 2003; Theaterpreis Intercultural Accents, Wien 2003; Österreichisches Staatsstipendium für Komposition 2004; Förderungspreis für Musik der Stadt Wien 2010. 2005 erschien ein umfassendes Katalogbuch über Gáls Klanginstallationen im Kehrer Verlag Heidelberg.
Owed to his multifaceted and interdisciplinary artistic approach, the Austrian artist, composer and musicologist Bernhard Gál is equally at home within the domains of contemporary music, installation art and media art. As of now, Gál has created around 80 sound installations and intermedia art projects, combining sound, light, objects, spatial concepts and video projections into intense and often site-specific, multidimensional art works. He also composes music for acoustic instruments and electro-acoustic music, as well as performing live as a (laptop) musician. Gál runs the art production platform Gromoga and is director of the Austrian non-profit art organization ‘sp ce’. Together with Belma Beslic-Gál, he curates the Viennese Festival ‘shut up and listen!’. Between 2006 and 2007 he taught sound art at the University of Arts in Berlin. Currently, Gál holds a research position at the Paris Lodron University Salzburg, in conjunction with the interdisciplinary doctoral college ‘Art and the Public’. For his music and art projects Gál has received several awards, including the Karl Hofer Prize Berlin 2001, the Theatre Award 'Intercultural Accents' Vienna 2003, an annual fellowship from the DAAD Artists in Berlin Programme 2003, the Austrian State Scholarship for Composition 2004, and the Outstanding Artist Award for Music of the City of Vienna 2010. His work has been presented in concerts, sound installations, exhibitions, and radio portraits around the world, and made available on ca. 30 audio publications as well as various catalogue books and DVDs. In 2005, the German publishing house Kehrer Verlag Heidelberg published a comprehensive catalogue book, documenting Gál’s intermedia installations since 1999.
