Smog

"Everyone knows what smog is but no one is likely to be able to say, without hesitating, what smog means in this piece, including myself, its creator. Has any artist managed to explain the content and narrative of his or her abstract painting? About the only thing that he can do is to name the colors used in the canvas but every child can do the same. ”Smog” is not an abstract piece literally. If we were to try to qualify its genre, we might say it is a kind of a collage, since there are in the piece some ”non-abstract” sounds. However, all these intelligible sounds are not connected into a whole that could be retold in the form of any kind of clear linear story. Is it, though, necessary to explain any of it?

Sometimes the author can share a kind of genesis of his artwork. How the very idea came about. Sailing on the Adriatic, in the middle of nowhere, it happened, once, that a tiny bird landed on the deck of my boat straight out of the boundless heaven. This is how my ”Fear of the Birds” came about but I was never asked to speak about the very piece itself. After the single art piece is finished innumerable variations of it start to be created in the mind of the listeners, spectators, readers. Composers of this kind of works should be banned from speaking about their pieces. Becket, for example was not alone in his refusal to explain his works. Who is Godot? Did even he know the answer? I would venture to guess that his audience may have a better inkling than Becket himself. So, dear listeners, listen to this piece and make your own ”Smog“. Do not expect any kind of explanation from me."
