Song as Technology

by Antye Greie-Ripatti

  • Statement

  • “Song as Technology” as the title suggests, deals with the potential and property of song. Chants and composed chants, also song, are practised with most peoples to preserve the cultures and their contents. The songs are considered as a storage medium. Of language, stories, life and land. As Lynne Kelly describes in her book "Memory Code" indigenous cultures of the now so called Australien continent have stored entire wisdoms of their peoples migration routes for example. European cultures also have traditions like the Baltic Singing Revolution to preserve and even reclaim their identity. So have other cultures deep traditions of language preservation, development and more.

In a hybrid conversation & science -inspired, speculative and poetic exploration, Antye Greie-Ripatti improvises with recorded knowledges and thoughts from many regions to carve out the potentials (and dangers) of 'song' for rec-on.org and for experimental radio.
