Art's Birthday goes back to the Fluxus artist Robert Filliou. In 1963, the artist declared January 17 the 1,000,000th birthday of art. Since then, this event has been celebrated worldwide with performances, concerts and exhibitions.
The EBU Ars Acustica has also been celebrating Art's Birthday since 2004. As part of the EBU Art's Birthday Special Evening 2023, British composer and artist Matthew Herbert invited artists from all over Europe to exchange and network on a live improvisation with kitchen sounds using the B-AIR system of the Slovenian Broadcasting Corporation.
There is music in every kitchen: from the clattering pot to the swinging egg slicer, cooking utensils offer a rich world of sound. Sampling artist Matthew Herbert used this for a pan-European kitchen concert with many guests following a precise concept in 4 sections.
In section 1, an organic free-range egg was cooked for 13 minutes while a second egg was simultaneously prepared as a hard egg. In the next section of the joint networked project, 10 loops each were created from the previously built kitchen sound database, then a 13 minute piece was to be created using only the notes E G G and finally the hard boiled eggs were peeled and eaten.
For Ö1 Kunstradio the artist group alien productions (Martin Breindl, Norbert Math and Andrea Sodomka) participated in Art's Birthday: The Kitchen.
