The LONG NIGHT OF RADIOART on channels of the Austrian National Radio (ORF) has a 10 year long tradition related to the ARS ELECTRONICA FESTIVAL.
In 1989 the first one of these unusual live events took place. It included some very unusual simultaneous performances and examples for a radioart involving the participation of the listeners.

Other important KUNSTRADIO projects involving LONG NIGHTS OF RADIOART in connection with the ARS ELECTRONICA FESTIVAL were
1995 HORIZONTAL RADIO
1996 RIVERS & BRIDGES
1997 RECYCLING THE FUTURE II
1998 LONG RADIONIGHT was a project by NEGATIVELAND

In compliance with decisions by the participants in Sound Drifting, the on air version of this global project will manifest itself strictly as a radio-installation without any performative elements. The basic on air rendering of all the incoming stream is done by Sounddrifter. The artists-teams which take turns about every two hours of the broadcast will not add anything to the material coming in from the sub-projects.
All they are able to do is to change certain parameters of the Sounddrifter so the general mood of the radio-installation might change. The only navigating device for the listeners are short jingles iproduced by the participants to indicate their geographical position and/or project title.
This radio-night will make for a very new experience for the artists as well as for the listeners.

The radio-program is fed back into the Sound Drifting system as a separate stream. After the event excerpts will be available as files.
