FTP-SERVER

The simplest way of using the Internet for the horizontal radio event is the exchange of digitized sounds via FTP.
In Linz (and hopefully also at some other stations) will be a FTP-Server which has a directory for each station to contain the sound material. Sounds which shouldn't be too long and which can be prepared in advance.

This sounds can be downloaded by everybody via Internet. So its a good possibility to exchange soundmaterial with the participants from overseas, and its material which is also available to people who are not within the range of the radiofrequenzies.

BUT one has to consider this is NOT a realtime transmission or broadcasting. It means that one can download the soundfiles which takes )depending on the length of the sounds and the bandwidth of your networkaccess) e.g. 10 minutes and than one can play it back via the soundcard of the computer.
AND to optimise the transmission time the quality is rather poor (normally 8bit with a bandwidth of max. 10 kHz). Technically its possibly to do it in a better quality but that would increase the time for downloading dramatically.
ANYHOW its a good chance to exchange e.g. soundsamples which can be " recycled" by the other participants.

Using FTP its also possible to exchange text and pictures etc.
