Vito Acconci

Excerpt from the sound track of an installation in the Galerie nächst St.Stephan, Vienna.

The installation was part of Acconcis "Cultural Space Pieces 1974-78". It was a contribution to the International Performance Festival, Vienna, 1978.

"My works were strongly influenced by the possibility to work in Europe. The first opportunity to do so was in 1972. At the same time I started to use language in my pieces. In the beginning it was improvised language....the use of language in works for Europe caused problems. Because of these works I started to use audio-tape ...to get around the language barriers...the language could be translated and be present in the work..1976 the works began....to deal with the special space, where the installation was to be created...not only with its physical qualities but also with the special cultural space..."
