New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc. located in Staten Island, New York, is a not-for-profit organization. Founded in 1981 by Helen Thorington and run by a staff of two - Thorington and Regine Beyer - its purpose is to stimulate and advance the general public`s awareness of new and innovative work in the arts 1) by producing and promoting new an experimental work for radio and other means of distribution; and 2) by encouraging and participating in the development, production and distribution of high quality audio recordings for radio and other means of distribution.

Founded in 1981 by Helen Thorington and run by a staff of two - Thorington and Regine Beyer - its purpose is to stimulate and advance the general public`s awareness of new and innovative work in the arts 1) by producing and promoting new an experimental work for radio and other means of distribution; and 2) by encouraging and participating in the development, production and distribution of high quality audio recordings for radio and other means of distribution.

Its weekly radio-arts series, NEW AMERICAN RADIO, which commisions artists from all backgrounds, disciplines and perspectives to create work for the radio medium entered its tenth year as a national weekly series in 1998. It is the only series of its kind in the U.S.
NRPA has developed other distribution means for its series including a cassette edtion; listening room exhibits; performance adaptations; and a website, http://www.somewhere.org. Selections from artists' works, scripts, scores and artists' writings are available on the site, as well as a full catalogue of works broadcast. In 1997-98, full programs will be made available for listening.

In addition to other limited radio series, NRPA has begun a project in the new media. Entitled TURBULENCE, http://www.turbulence.org, this project is also artist-oriented. Now in its second year, TURBULENCE commissions artists to create new works for the web that make use of web-based and multi-media technologies.
