THE MOBILE JUKEBOX:

VANCOUVER
LIVE AUDIO

The Jukebox offers a very simple opportunity to provide the "Immersive Sounds" project with an always acessible array of various sounds from different locations in Vancouver without necessarily installing a permanentely opened connection to a server.

The assurance of an input from Vancouver and the provision of appropriate content-on-demand was a major aspect in the process of coming up with the idea of a mobile interface, rather than forcing the event in Vancouver to be a live, and inevetibly, a less feasible one.

We decided for an "interactive soundsculpture" in form of a box with specific abilities, which is set up in approximately 10 different locations in Vancouver and relocated every couple of days. Appealing design of the box attracts people and invites them to get familiar with the different features which are:
  • Recording of the surrounding noise/sound while keeping a large handle pulled. As long as this handle is pulled the built-in tape recorder keeps on recording.
  • When pulling the handle, a slot opens where soundfiles in form of recording media (tapes, cds, etc.) can be thrown into the box.
  • Attached to the box are envelopes and a pen to make it possible to adress and personalize the files. This makes it easy to give them back after digitizing and also naming the artists on the webpage.
As a real-realtime object, the box allows one to capture the moment and offers a great insight in actual happenings. The different locations will be selected very carefully to receive the mostbroad variety of sounds.

The necessary publications will be in form of posters and flyers which contain a time schedule for the appearance of the box in the city, so that one, if interested, knows when and where he/she can drop off stuff or record something.

The digitized material will be encoded and ftp to a RealAudio server in Austria or Vancouver, where the people in Bregenz can access and play them.
