SOUNDS FOR FRIDAY, July 24, 1998
  1. cube: The space is divided into 2 circles of sound - one from the ceiling, the other from the floor. The idea is to invite the listener to sit down in the imaginary pool of water (the video projection). When the listener enters the space, she/he is assaulted by a wave of radio static (with the distant sounds of packet (modem-like tones) radio in the distance. If the listener walks to the centre of the space and enters the pool, then the radio noise stops and the listener can hear the sounds of the sound pool coming from the floor speakers.
The Theremin sits in the pool, on the floor, and effects the switch from noise to tranquility.
The sound pool contains ambient material selected from the Private Radio (www.front.bc.ca/monster/monster.html) archive, with additional material recently wired by Ken Gregory (a Winnipeg sound and installation artist who is currently in Finland with the Polar Circuit).
  2. always the 3 live RealAudio feeds.
  3. public space: Outside, there are 2 sets of speakers - one facing the KUB cafe, and the other filling the entrance way to the theatre. Different channels from the sound pool appear on each set.
  4. live RealAudio stream from Immersive Sound: various sounds from the cube
  5. CB ...
  6. Mix of the Day The mix of the day for today was actually done last night using sounds from Thursday's setup mixed with the Private Radio samples that were fed into the sound pool last night.
