a singersongwriter born in Lubbock, Texas who has lived in New York since the 70s, his 80s group The Ned Sublette Band played regulary at New Yorks finest dives: CBGB, The Pyramid, Tramps, Lone Star Cafe. ("It wasent country punk", he recalls, "because all the guys in the band could really play".) Prior to that he played experimental heavy metal with Glenn Branca and premiered works by John Cage and La Monte Young. Best known in the 90s as a producer of Cuban music, he travels to Cuba often and is co-founder and president of the label QBADISC. He also was senior co-producer of the popular public radio program "Afropop Worldwide" for seven years, for which he produced over a hundred one-hour radio documentaries about music from Africa and the African diaspora. He has produced recordings by Los Van Van, Los Munequitos de Matanzas, Kanda Bongo Man, Maraca Y Otra Vision, Adewale Ayuba and many more.
