Claude Schryer



Claude Schryer: 1959, Ottawa. Lives in Montréal.
He was raised in a Franco-Ontarian community in North Bay, Ontario. In 1981, he completed a Bachelor of Music degree in composition at Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario. In 1981-82 and 1985-86 he was a resident composer at The Banff Centre of Arts. In 1989 he received a Masters of Music in Composition degree from McGill University in Montréal. He was Artistic Director of the Inter-Arts program at The Banff Centre of Arts from 1988-90 and was Artistic Director of the 7 e Printemps électroacoustique of ACREQ, an international festival of electroacoustic music on the theme of acoustic ecology, which was held in June 1992 in Montréal. In 1992 he released Sound Letter, a CD compilation of his electroacoustic works on the theme of ecology. His work as a composer and producer involves the use of technology as an interface to explore ecological issues, such as soundscape analysis and design and the relationship between electronic media and ecology. Schryer is an active composer, performer, producer and curator of new music, radio art and inter-disciplinary production based in Montréal and is presently involved with the Cycle Orchestra of Montréal, the World Forum of Acoustic Ecology and is Director of the Canadian Electroacoustic Community of Montréal.

Schryer wuchs in einer franko-kanadischen Gemeinde in North Bay, Ontario, auf. 1981 schloß er sein Kompositionsstudium an der Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario, ab. 1981/82 und 1985/86 war er Composer-in-residence im Banff Centre of Arts. Von 1988 bis 1990 war er künstlerischer Direktor des Inter-Arts Programmes am Banff Centre. 1992 übernahm er die künstlerische Leitung des 7 e Printemps électroacoustique in Montréal, eines internationalen Festivals zum Thema Klangökologie. 1992 erschien sein "Sound Letter", eine CD-Anthologie seiner elektroakustischen, klangökologischen Arbeiten. Seine Arbeit als Komponist und Produzent konzentriert sich auf den Einsatz neuer Technologien zur Erforschung ökologischer Themenstellungen, wie z.B. die Analyse von Klanglandschaften, Klangdesign, und die Beziehung elektronische Medien und Umwelt. Schryer, der in Montréal lebt, ist Kurator für Neue Musik und beschäftigt sich mit Radiokunst und interdisziplinären Arbeiten.
