Born 1929 in Zrenjanin, Jugoslavia. 1944/45 deported to Auschwitz and Buchenwald.
Ivanji studied architecture and German philology. He worked as a technician at building sites and as a teacher in Belgrade and the Serbian provinces before turning to journalism, publishing, the theater and the diplomatic service (embassy-counsellor at the Yugoslav Embassy, Bonn 1974 - 1978). For over 20 years Ivanij acted as an interpreter for Tito and the Yugoslav government and party leadership. (e.g. at the KSZE founding-conference in Helsinki, 1975, at the summit of the Communist and Workers Parties in East-Berlin, 1976, or at the summit of the block-free states in Havana, 1979. From 1982 to 1988 Ivanij was secretary general of the Yugoslav writers association.

Ivan Ivanij is the author of many novels, short-stories, essays, plays and poems both in Serbian and German. He translated many important works of literature from German and Hungarian into Serbian and from Serbian into German.

Since 1992 Ivan Ivanij lives in Belgrade and Vienna.

Geboren 1929 in Zrenjanin, (Großbetschkerek), im Banat, Jugoslawien. Als Jude 1945/45 in den Konzentrationslagern Auschwitz, Buchenwald und mehreren Arbeitskommandos von Buchenwald. Studierte in Belgrad Architektur und Germanistik. War Techniker am Bau, Lehrer in technischen Oberschulen in Belgrad und der serbischen Provinz, ( Fächer: deskriptive Geometrie, Baukonstruktionen und technisches Zeichnen), Journalist, Verlagslektor, Dramaturg und Theaterdirektor, Diplomat, (Botschaftsrat der jugoslawischen Botschaft in Bonn 1974-1978), über 20 Jahre lang Dolmetscher für Tito und die jugoslawische Staats- und Parteiführung, unter anderem Teilnahme an der KSZE-Gründungskonferenz in Helsinki 1975, der Gipfelkonferenz der kommunistischen und Arbeiterparteien in Berlin-Ost 1976 und der Gipfelkonferenz der Blockfreien in Havana 1979. 1982 bis 1988 Generalsekretär des jugoslawischen Schriftstellerverbandes.

Zahlreiche Übersetzungen aus dem Deutschen und Ungarischen ins Serbische, unter anderem Werke von Günter Grass, Heinrich Böll, Max Frisch, Karl Jaspers, Milo Dor, und aus dem Serbischen ins Deutsche. Lebt seit 1992 sowohl in Wien, als auch in Belgrad.
