Raised in Calgary, Parmela Attariwala was a student of the Mount Royal Academy for Gifted Young Musicians and a member of the Calgary Fiddlers.

She pursued her musical studies in Indian universities and the conservato in Bern, Switzerland.

A chance decision to study ethnomusicology a the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies kindled an interest in medieval Indian devotional poetry and the music that accompanied it.
