American sound artist Guido Gamboa presents a new work for radio called „Left-Handed Club“:

„This piece is a sound collage that uses as its foundation a vocal survey of the writings of various figures who have shared the chance identity of being left-handed. Words from the French symbolist poet Paul Verlaine, the German expressionist Paul Klee, the Dutch barbarist painter Karel Appel, the Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov, the American conceptualist John Baldessari and the contemporary Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho were recited by various voice actors and then processed, abstracted or recontextualized in manners that serve to reimagine and transmogrify in equal measures the relation of their contents. One can consequently view the contingency of being left-handed as a type of larger aleatoric process chaining together the otherwise disparate ideas of a group of individuals whose shared characteristic is one that in any other context would be inconsequential— something of a “club of left-handers” is formed through my guiding hand.

As with many aleatorically-minded works, what ultimately comes into focus as the object of interest is no longer just the source materials and their originary contexts but the new and unforeseen meanings proposed by their fortuitous concatenations. In the sonic gathering of the voices of these various figures along with even more disjunctive sonic miscellanea, a new collective voice may reveal itself for interpretation beyond the sum of its parts, if not only for a simple embrace of the most minor manifestations of chance in the formations of our identities.“

For the Vienna Biennale for Change 2021 at the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna (until October 3, 2021), artist Siegrun Appelt and dramaturg Constanze Müller have developed a sound installation with whispering children's voices.

One of the questions Siegrun Appelt and Constanze Müller are concerned with is whether a balance can be found between the preservation of nature and its use by humans – on the one hand as the basis of life and on the other as a shapable object. In this respect, the art installation fits into the concept of the Vienna Biennale for Change, which is dedicated to the central challenge of our time, climate care, in the disciplines of art, architecture and design.

An essential part of the installation are recordings of children whispering messages. The texts were created from interviews that Siegrun Appelt and Constanze Müller conducted with experts on the topics of climate care, sustainability and daylight. All the experts are members oft he Daylight Academy, an initiative that promotes international and interdisciplinary cooperation among scientists, architects and other professionals involved in daylight research or with a strong interest in daylight related topics

The voice recordings outline not only problems but mainly possible solutions. The experts come from the fields of architecture, chemistry, ethnobotany, solar energy / building physics, sustainable building technology, urban ecology and chronobiology.

The speakers aged from 7 to 11 years, are Sofia Gavril, Matteo Haudek, Valerie Hiller and Eloise Sigros (Opera School of the Vienna State Opera, rehearsal: Karl Wenninger).
