The "Prix Palma Ars Acustica" was awarded this year for the sixth time. This competition for radio art is organized by the Euroradio Ars Acustica group of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). This group consists since 1989 of editors who produce programs in their respective public service broadcasters in the context of radio art and Ars Acustica, as well as collaborate with artists from all areas to experiment on the radio and explore the limits of the medium Radio.

In Deutschlandfunk Kultur’s submission to the Prix Palma Ars Acustica 2018, the Californian duo Black Spirituals asks: What are you listening for? and explores the purpose of listening. The double-headed axe of the god Changó invokes ideas concerning the potential focus and purpose of listening. Black Spirituals feel compelled to explore these assumptions through a creative inquiry into redesigning and recontextualizing a genre shaped by the historical conditions of the movement of people’s bodies over time, space, and land, while preserving critically innovative technologies.

Every Time A Ear di Soun: “What Are You Listening For” was part of “Every Time A Ear di Soun”, a collaboration between documenta 14 and Deutschlandfunk Kultur. For the duration of documenta 14, nine radio stations in Greece, Cameroon, Colombia, Lebanon, Brazil, Indonesia, the United States, and Germany constitute a worldwide art exhibition on air.
