Visions from Morocco
curated by Anna Raimondo for Saout Radio

1) “Random playlist” by Laila Hida – 5’44’’
2) “Close-up” by Randa Maroufi – 8’36’’
3) “Carnival in Casbah” by Abdellah M. Hassak – 15’37’’

Anna Raimondo of Saout Radio has invited three Moroccan Artists to propose new radio works, which will be presented in the framework of the Ö1 focus week "Nebenan: Marokko". The curatorial statements follows two principles axes of research. The conceptual frame questions the female intuition as a form of analysis and knowledge of a territory. On the other hand, the project aims to explore p ersonal and diverse ways of translation of visual field into sonic and radiophonic aesthetics and practices. The focus is the interpretation of the present and the prevision of the future of Morocco, the place where these artists come from.

How to use intuition as a form of knowledge of Morocco, their original territory? How to explore by feelings, perceptions and visions its present? And in so doing, how to guess, imagine its possible futures?
Following Yves Klein’s quotation “To want is to see in advance”, ultimately, the artists are invited to reflect and create possible futures starting from the visions of the present of their country.

1) “Random playlist” by Laila Hida

sound PLAY

This sound piece will take you into a walk through the quietness of an oasis of south morocco, to the fresh air of atlas mountain.
Anywhere I went I have met by chance a musician, a singer, a live concert in places where there is nothing that is so called a stage. Nothing was planned, but somehow it always was a fortunate and beautiful encounter. Music remains a shelter for resisting to darkness and ignorance.
Random Playlist is a way to say that any circumstance is a good reason to grab an instrument and start playing. The notes are floating in the air and bodies moving to the rhythm of the wind. Music soothes the soul and elevates it. It is a spontaneous pursuit of pleasure and joy.
I didn’t have to look for it but somehow the music found me.

2) “Close-up” by Randa Maroufi

sound PLAY

How is a famous painting of western art history from the 19th century interpreted by Moroccan people of my surrounding today?  "Close-up" is a participative work which invites various people of my network (friends, family, artists,…) to describe or to comment via whatsapp Gustave Courbet’s painting "The origin of the world”. "Close-up" is especially a way to speak about the «intimate thing» and about its representation.

3) “Canival In Casbah” by Abdellah M. Hassak

sound PLAY

“Carnival in Casbah” is a sound journey through Marrakech Medina’s noises and soundscapes, mixed with musical improvisations, poetries. It’s a personal and impressionist picture of the place.
