“PARADISELOST – Blown Backwards into the Future” is the title of a year-long series of new radio art in twelve parts. The individual audio pieces are created by different artists from Germany, Great Britain, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Greece, and Italy, each time in collaboration with the artist and theatremaker Marold Langer-Philippsen, who developed the concept and curates the series. PARADISELOST dips into the eponymous 17th-century epic poem by the English poet John Milton, which is also divided up into twelve chapters that recount the banishment of the fallen angels to hell, the Fall of Man and the expulsion from Paradise.

“As friends for decades and frequent collaborators in various opera, theatre, and music projects, Roberto Paci Dalò and Marold Langer-Philippsen already met in the studio of the ORF Funkhaus in mid-January to record the greater part of PARADISELOST X HIGHWAY. For the first time, the chronological development of the episodes was broken, as the audio piece referring to John Milton’s tenth book was created before the artists knew how the two preceding instalments would sound – an unusual approach to this year-long series.

“In John Milton’s work this is the moment when all the hemispheres and spaces described so far appear like a multiple stage setting for the ongoing narration. While Eve explains how the snake tricked her into eating what was forbidden, the fallen angel Satan returns from Paradise to the other devils that are just constructing a broad bridge over chaos in order to be able to get faster to future worlds, because they assume that more and more, and newer and newer paradises will be created.

“With clarinet, electronic devices, voice and everyday objects Roberto Paci Dalò and Marold Langer-Philippsen create a soundscape where hell, heaven and earth converge.”
