“The
Ripper [Archive]” is a Berlin based audio, radio and media
recycling project which is sifting through the endless private
and
public audio & visual archives of sampled footage
generated
from all kinds of sources. This project is not software or computer
based and no fancy scripts are used for running this piece. The
material is
selected, performed, and re-contextualized on
the
spot and can come from
many sources, found or donated: premium
vinyl
collections, forgotten tape stashes, homemade creations, youtube junk
and internet spam. The material is usually organized with simple
associative keyword lists, which two rippers exchange before the
performance. This creates space
room for spontaneity, and inhibits routine.
This process is comparable
to sculpture, with a
strong emphasis on audio rebus. The chosen
materials are
collaged in a rather raw and direct way, no fancy editing, processing
or filtering applied. All the dust, dirt and debris of
a massive and expanding global
archive of junk
is collaged into these raw pieces. Especially the unfiltered and often bizarre spam (the 2.0 content of home-recording) outsourced from platforms like Youtube and used in opposition to highbrow art music. It could be an American suburban house wife freaking out in front of her Midwest suburban house confronted with the whispering voice of Miles Davis, or a monkey farting into the microphone layered over some old Musique concrete classic played back at 16 rpm. The scope of The Ripper is to challenge and question the daily unreflected practice of "private mass archiving mania". An archive whose value nobody can really determine. |
