long-term
project “go your gait” she has conducted extensive research
and field studies on movements and patterns of walking, culminating in
an exhibition and catalogue for Linz09, the cultural capital of Europe
in 2009. For Kunstradio, katrinem translates observations she made in
public squares of various cities into a radio piece.
Artist's statement: „go
your gait! part12“ is based on material gathered during a time of
2 years which I spent in Linz and 15 of her partner and sister cities.
this, 16 audio-visual works developed, which were shown in the
exhibition GANGARTEN as part of the European Cultural Capital Linz 09. The purpose of my journey was to find out where and how residents walked at a location. For
my studies I made video notations as templates of musical scores.
Space and site, currents of mobility and ways of walking, render
themselves compositional agents.
The
steps are sonified by sine tones. By differing greatly from the
conventional noise of footsteps, these tones direct concentration to
the rhythmical aspect. The tones chosen, in all the cities, stand for
the possible routes by which a street or square may be traversed.
In
„go your gait! part12“, cities are interwoven in the order
of my visits. Sonic discoveries that came across my path, such as the
chorus of air conditioners in Albufeira, the pulsing beat of traffic
signals in Linköping, the waterfall of the Tammerkoski in Tampere
or the noise of countless high heels in Nishnij Nowgorod, mingle in
with the patterns of steps on-site.
