“PHONART – The Lost Languages of Europe” is a European network project led by Enterprise Z (AT) with 3 partner groups - Mani DOO (HR), RingRing (RS) and mamapapa (CZ). Launched in May 2010, PHONART will continue until the end of 2011, culminating in a 4-way live stream radio project.

PHONART is based on the notion that all communication and all art stem from an authentic and individual primal scream. In this sense, PHONART seeks to create new connections between the participating countries, artists and audience and provide a platform for contemporary and traditional art forms, with an emphasis on marginalized ethnic, linguistic and aesthetic groups and practices.

Based on a sound installation at the Ringring Festival in Belgrade in April, the artist, musician and composer Zahra Mani has created a radio piece for Kunstradio. “places, traces” is a radiophonic approach to her own biography and her sonic roots.

Zahra Mani has written the following text to accompany her acoustic piece:
 
The title is borrowed from a line of Rumi’s Diwan I Shams I Tabriz, “my place is the placeless, my trace is the traceless”.
 
My places and traces are real and imaginary. Childhood places are always subject to nostalgia and coloured by memory but there is still something akin to a solid ground, or various solid grounds, beneath my feet – a rock, a certain kind of dust, a specific light, a way of moving through urban streets, a way of seeing, perceiving, which, despite coming from various sometimes contrary starting points, nonetheless remains coherent …
 
I grew up in London and Pakistan, live in Austria and Croatia and travel a lot – not between worlds but between constantly connected places. Borders, for me, are absurd, abstruse symbols of an artificially perceived need for separation, probably based on a fear of difference that I can’t grasp or share.
 
The languages and spaces I have inhabited are all  lost in some ways but retain a presence in my thoughts and my musical semantics.
 
The nationalities and cultures of which I partake are reflected in the various music traditions I learnt to hear and play, which led me to explore sound more closely, deconstructing acoustic assumptions.
 
Sonic explorations constitute a way of making music that depends on very elementary listening and hearing, which has come to define my approach to sound – an approach that finds particular comfort in the communicative isolation of radio space, the most natural habitat, perhaps, for sonic particles.
 
the spaces of my childhood and of my memory don’t strike me as separate entities.
 
radio is space and aether – beams, waves, static, sound
 
at some point, in the process of being broadcast and heard, sound becomes concrete – and yet is always wave
 
which itself is flow and undulates carries on and across transfers translates
 
radio art is not music not broadcasting not sound-art not medium but frame structure form platform self-defining as sonic snapshot and self-referential circling encircling spiralling in itself outwards to reception and being heard being lost and everything in between
 
my sound and word are a language between, using radio as animated sound machine

“Let your ears send a / message of surprise or perplexity. That’s the Way. / Was asked: “Dr. Suzuki, what is the difference between / men are men & mountains are mountains before studying Zen / & men are men & mountains are mountains after studying Zen?” It is not a question of / going in to oneself or out to the world. It is / rather a condition of fluency that’s in and out. / Need I quote Blake? Certainly not. Spots are spots and skill’s needed to turn them to the point of practicability.”

“places, traces oder ortlose orte, spurlose spuren” is a piece composed for Ö1 Kunstradio in collaboration with the EU network project PHONART – The Lost Languages of Europe. The piece consciously exploits the intimacy of radio space to take listeners on an acoustic journey using stereo effects to weave an intricate acoustic web consisting of sonic particles gleaned from a highly personal journey to lost, forgotten and remaining places.
