If Art Is The Answer

In the – recent – history of Art’s Birthday celebrations, the Western Front in Canada has always played a vital role. The Western Front is an artist run organisation in Vancouver. Robert Filliou visited the Western Front shortly after its foundation in 1973 and conducted one of his first telecommunication experiments. Filliou continued to collaborate with Western Front artists – and until today his ideas are importang to the programming of the institutions. Amongst these influential ideas are experiments with communication technologies, as well as the concept of the “Eternal Network”. Art’s Birthday and the accompanying festivals go back to an initiative of the Western Front, and especially the artist Hank Bull.

An were did the Western Front celebrate this year? On their attic. Artists Anna Friz, Eileen Kage, Roberto Paci Dalò, Jean Routhier and Absolute Value of Noise transformed the space into a huge echo chamber. The program „ATTIC, drawing the future from liminal spaces“ was broadcast live.
