tamtam’s new piece can be assigned to the genre of composed soundscapes. Auinger and Strobl deal with the topographical features and geographical location of Tyrol’s capital town in a sonic approach. Based on recordings made in and around Innsbruck in summer 2005, tamtam have developed a composition following their north-to-south hike through rather diverse terrains.

In summer 2005, the Austrian musicians Sam Auinger and Hannes Strobl spent a week in Innsbruck making outdoor sound recordings of and in Tyrol’s capital town. These serve as basis for a composition with and derived from the sound of this town – a compositional idea sparked by Innsbruck’s specific geographical situation: Located at the centre of the Inn valley, the town is bordered by the North range in the north and by the Mittelgebirge and the Patschakofel in the south.

The hike starts at the Seegrube high up in the mountains in the north of Innsbruck … and via Hungerburg to Büchsenhausen where the artists eventually approach the town … the Inn Bridge leads them to the historical centre … here, coming across several courtyards, they roam around the New Town (centre, Pradl, Saggen) and continue their hike towards the Brenner motorway – which they cross on their way to the Lansersee at the south of the Inn valley.
