Doreen Mende, Berlin-based curator of the show "Ear Appeal“ asked eleven international artists to explore and represent (picture) the role of sounds and tones respectively the relationship between noise and music – sound in general – in western (i.e. capitalist) countries and their public spaces. The exhibition currently on show at the Kunsthalle Exnergasse in Vienna, "Ear Appeal", deals with our everyday encounters with various kinds of processed sound waves, for instance functional music in shopping malls and elevators, telephone loops, comforting tinkles in hotel lobbies, restaurants, and doctors’ waiting rooms, examining the direct influence sound has on society with regards to the question: „How is individual behaviour controlled by means of sound?“ An exhibition on the theme of sound in public and social space cannot take place solely indoors. Thus, Radio being a public space, Kunstradio’s "Ear Appeal“ special can be regarded as the extension of the exhibition space on air: Three broadcasts with new, site-specific radio art works open up the exhibition to this further space.
