KUNSTRADIO - RADIOKUNST

EAR APPEAL (Teil 2)
– a Kunstradio special series aired in collaboration with the Kunsthalle Exnergasse, Vienna on the occasion of their current exhibition „Ear Appeal“

» I. Arbeit kenn' ich nur vom Hören-Sagen – Ohranwendung in der Wertegemeinschaft ...
I know work only from hearsay – the use of the ear in the community of values …

Doreen Mende, Berlin-based curator of the show "Ear Appeal“ asked eleven international artists to explore and represent (picture) the role of sounds and tones respectively the relationship between noise and music – sound in general – in western (i.e. capitalist) countries and their public spaces. The exhibition currently on show at the Kunsthalle Exnergasse in Vienna, "Ear Appeal", deals with our everyday encounters with various kinds of processed sound waves, for instance functional music in shopping malls and elevators, telephone loops, comforting tinkles in hotel lobbies, restaurants, and doctors’ waiting rooms, examining the direct influence sound has on society with regards to the question: „How is individual behaviour controlled by means of sound?“

An exhibition on the theme of sound in public and social space cannot take place solely indoors. Thus,
research, various actions in the city’s surroundings, radio transmissions and cooperations with institutions on-site expand the exhibition space over the urban space, that also offers the source material, from interviews with Vienna’s residents to the city’s sounds etc., for the artistic interventions and works.

Radio being a public space, Kunstradio’s "Ear Appeal“ special can be regarded as the extension of the exhibition space on air: Three broadcasts with new, site-specific radio art works open up the exhibition to this further space.

Arbeit kenn' ich nur vom Hören-Sagen – Ohranwendung in der Wertegemeinschaft ...
I know work only from hearsay – the use of the ear in the community of values …

by Rashad Becker

What does what you do sound like? What do you do when you hear? What does it sound like when you are what you do? What do you do when you hear who you are? Work, and ear-work.

In analogy to the "Image of Work“ Rashad Becker’s contribution presents a collection of materials for a "Sound characteristics of Work“. In a series of interviews, the musician and sound artist questioned working people on their subjective perception of their use of hearing: how does one use one’s ear in general, and at work?
Becker wanted answers to this question from people working in various fields – from those who work in "traditional" jobs, as well as from freelancers who are confronted with very different working conditions. The question also reflects the different economic and socio-cultural contexts of Belgrade, Berlin, Paris, and Vienna.

A number of very promising analogies can be drawn between the concepts of reality of "labour“ and "sound“ in a neo-capitalist society: Both are increasingly recognised in a phenomenological way; with regards to a cross-system validity, both show similar discrepancies and ambiguities.

The fact that subjective possibilities of experiencing, and identity are considered in this "Sound characteristics of Work“ evokes a number of statements on the form and perception of labour within rhizome capitalism.

Due to the sonic contrast of different working fields and Becker’s request that his interview partners name and express specific actions acoustically (onomatopoeia), both the spaces of production and their respective conditions, as well as an individual perception and existence of labour can be compared in an inter-subjective and intercultural way.

Ultimately, Rashad Becker’s radiophonic piece also highlights the role and function of radio within labour production.
