Today's programme also marks the beginning of "Talking Crosswalks", a project by Wolfgang Temmel (assistance: Norbert Math). Throughout the whole year, a piece from the collection of talking crosswalks mini-recordings from all over the world will be played at the beginning of the Kunstradio programme. Thus, an acoustic atlas develops by and by which represents the variety of signals which are different from country to country and, sometimes, even from town to town. At the kick-off of this series you can hear an interview by Norbert Math with the engineer and expert for facilities for the disabled, Mr. Günther Ertl [MP3]. The point of departure for the acoustic route around the world is Graz where Wolfgang Temmel himself has captured the sounds of a talking crosswalk in a field recording.
Talking Crosswalks is part of the sinnlos (www.sinnlos.st) project which takes place within the scope of Graz 2003.

Mit der heutigen Sendung startet das von Wolfgang Temmel (Mitarbeit: Norbert Math) konzipierte Projekt "Talking Crosswalks". Bis zum Ende des Jahres wird aus der Sammlung an Blindenampeln-Ministücken, die quer um den Globus aufgenommen wurden, jeweils ein Stück zu Beginn der Kunstradio-Sendung gespielt werden. So entsteht ein akustischer Weltatlas, der die Vielfalt der Signale, die von Land zu Land oder oft auch von Stadt zu Stadt unterschiedlich sind, wiedergibt.
Zum Auftakt der Serie ist ein Interview von Norbert Math mit dem Experten für behindertengerechte Einrichtungen, Ingenieur Günther Ertl [MP3], zum Thema Blindenampeln zu hören. Der Ausgangspunkt für die akustische Route um die Welt ist Graz, Wolfgang Temmel hat hier selbst den Sound der Blindenampeln in Form eines Field Recordings eingefangen. Talking Crosswalks ist Teil des Projekts sinnlos (www.sinnlos.st) im Rahmen von Graz 2003.

This is the radio version of Wolfgang Temmel's contribution to the on line - on site - on air project devolve into II which was presented in 2002. Besides streaming the elevator sounds, he realized an on site installation which, apart from the audio tracks, also comprised video recordings of the elevator's interior and of tunnels.

"Two sound pieces - elevator up and elevator down - are the point of departure, the raw material for the piece elevator music. I have an elevator and it is a sound machine. A simple elevator on the outside of the house where I live connects the top floor with the one below.I have neglected its maintenance,and, in the course of time, its initially quiet operating sound has developed into intensive sound which becomes even louder at low temperatures.The speed at which the elevator moves up and down decreases extremely at temperatures below zero, and the sounds also slow down to long screeching noises.
This climate-induced slow motion music and moreover, unplugged, can be regarded as a statement challenging acceleration and speed as well as the horror of coming to a standstill which increasingly dominate our society."

Zwei Soundaufnahmen - Lift rauf und Lift runter - sind das Ausgangsmaterial für dieses Stück von Wolfgang Temmel. Zu hören ist die Radioversion seiner im Rahmen des on line - on site - on air-Projektes devolve into II präsentierten Arbeit, welche neben einem Stream und dem Soundtrack auch eine Installation mit Videoaufnahmen aus dem Inneren des Lifts sowie aus Tunnels umfasste.

An der Außenfassade des Hauses, in dem der Künstler wohnt, befindet sich ein Aufzug, das den obersten Stock mit dem darunterliegenden verbindet. Im Laufe der Zeit, begünstigt durch Witterung und die Vernachlässigung der Wartung, hat der ursprünglich ruhig und leise laufende Aufzug ein Spektrum an Geräuschen entwickelt, das je nach Geschwindigkeit und Temperatur von einem tiefen, langsamen Brummen bis zu einem hohen Kreischen und Quietschen reicht. Bei niedrigen Temperaturen, besonders, wenn sie unter Null fallen, verringert sich nicht nur die Fahrtgeschwindigkeit drastisch, sondern steigt der Geräuschpegel zu einem lauten Dröhnen. Wolfgang Temmel benutzt für diese Arbeit den alten, ziemlich ramponierten Aufzug als Soundmaschine. So gesehen, ist diese klimabedingte Zeitlupen-Musik eine Manifestation gegen den unsere Gesellschaft dominierenden Geschwindigkeitsrausch und die Angst vor dem Stillstand.
