A staircase installation which was set up at the parking place/picnic area Kulm on the B 54 near Pischelsdorf in Styria on July 19, 2003 by the culture initiative K.U.L.M. is the starting point for the work \"deviation, stills\" by Petra Ganglbauer and Andrea Sodomka: The artists have created a radiophonic version of the installation - forming, analogical to the form of the staircase, gradually moving acoustic spaces of perception.
Road signs and markings, stops, deviations, reorientation are the issues of the analysis. A staircase which has already left countless destinations behind and is now situated on the Kulm serves as actual starting point and as well as virtual parenthesis. It is a metaphor for the search of identity and the erosion of meaning on the one hand and is orientation and the expansion of the view on the other. The staircase as a radio object.

The stair's voice (Gabriele Buch) is audible in form of an interior monologue of becoming a subject, circling around the dissipation and finding of identity, around the inner turmoil, around reverse developments, but which also - in brief instant configurations - sketches a supposedly firmly outlined self. It reflects the state of the nomadising staircase which has left behind the phases of functionality and meaningless.

Signals from diverse navigation systems such as maritime, aircraft or satellite radio, sometimes not decodable, coded patches of language, the Morse code etc. accompany, infiltrate, transgress the stair's monologue and are regarded as communication forms of travelling.

The sound sequences create, with their disparity, atmospheric landscapes, comparable with topographies; the sentences uttered by the staircase resemble an itinerary where the junctions represent the different radio signals. It's, at the same time, a waterborne journey, but also one which takes place ashore, in the air, and emotionally.

The title:
"deviation": means to leave the route (course), a mistake of the compass evoked by magnetic iron parts of a ship. Deviation also outlines sudden emotional tilting points which make any emotional continuity impossible.

"Stills" means those resting places and stops where the travelling motion is briefly frozen.

"A rolling stone turns into a machine. A birds wings turn into a helicopter."

Andrea Sodomka created the piece "Zwischenwelt" for a "place of rest in the mountains" - a temporary sound installation project in the Alps near Innsbruck which was initiated by Bernhard Kathan. By means of splitting sounds of nature into their tiniest components and rearranging the single particles, she has generated completely new, to date never heard sound formations. Actually, only the nuances inbetween are audible, which evoke an acoustic state hovering between the poles "natural surrounding" and "technically designed environment".
Bernhard Kathan's project which is also titled "Stadtflucht: 10m/sec" (migration from the city) is a place for resting and relaxing from the beginning of July till the end of October, where amidst of mountains sound pieces by 8 different artists can be heard.

Another sound work for Bernhard Kathan's "Ruheraum im Gebirge" is a piece by the German artist Dorothee von Rechenberg and is a kind of linguistic study of the medicinal herb Arnica montana wrapped into a short radio play. The broad spectrum of terms used for this plant (from Allerleikraut to Wundkraut) which is highly respected for its healing effects is the basis for Dorothee von Rechenbergs experimental narration; but Arnica montana is also said to have magical forces. The linguistic modules for this radio piece are the often lyrical folklorisic names on the one hand and tales told about this plant on the other.
