[ English Version ]

[ Deutsche Version ]

In the 700th Kunstradio - Radiokunst show, Sergej Mohntau trace the (hi)story of the audio tape and the new possibilities for recording the voice and methods of storytelling conjoined with this new technology. The starting point for their piece called "Tabak" (tobacco) is a historical detail linked to the invention of the tape recorder according to which, cigarette paper played quite an essiential role. For it was Fritz Pfleumer, the owner of a cigarette factory, who invented the magnetic tape in 1928 rather by chance.

The possibility of audio recordings implied that the voice and language were no longer exclusively linked to the human body, but were also entrusted to machines and technical memory media. Thus, not only the voice, but also (recalled) history became manipulative.

"Tabak" is a radiophonic narration in the form of an improvised DJ set. Sergej Mohntau tell an improvised acoustic story of the audio tape by means of using a pool of self-written, -spoken, and -composed vocal and musical samples as well as diverse found footage materials. Conventional mnemo technologies such as verses and metrics are substituted by storage media like harddrive, audio tapes, vinyl records, and CDs - and are varied from time to time.

Sergej Mohntau is a music- and literature-performance project by Jürgen Berlakovich and Thomas Pfeffer.
