A CASSETTE OF THIS PROGRAM CAN BE ORDERED FROM THE "ORF TONBANDDIENST"

The contributions for today’s and next week’s broadcast focus on the topic of Radiophonic Art from Mexico. They are part of a contribution by Radio Educación, one of the partners in the vast network for the Long Night of Radio Art within the RADIOTOPIA on line – on air project which took place in September 2002. Radio Educación made a selection of radiophonic pieces focusing especially on soundscapes which mediate the diversity and vividness of mexican mega-cities as well as the cultural background of the country in an atmospheric way.

Radio Educación, a public cultural radio station located in Mexico City, is dedicated to promoting radio art – doing so by providing a public platform whith their special radio programm. Besides, Radio Educación is on of the main organizers of the International Radio Biennal which took place for the 4th time in 2002 in Mexico City. Following an idea by its director, Lidia Camacho, Radio Educación features a weekly radio-art program with the title "El Arte de Escuchar El Radioarte" and, as a producer, plays an important role in promoting this specific art form.

Jorge Reyes recorded sounds of the Zocalo, a vast square located in the centre of Mexico City, and looped this specific soundscape consisting of a babble of voices, traffic noise, church bells ringing, public announcements etc. The soundscape is an intense acoustic approach towards the everyday buzz of this urban space. Zocaloop was produced by LEAS, Laboratorio de Experimentación Artística Sonora, a laboratory for experimental acoustic art founded by Lidia Camacho, and was awarded at the most recent International Radio Biennial in Mexico City.

The second piece, too, focuses on Mexico City and this mega-city’s exceptional soundscape. The anthropologist and programmer for Radio Educación Mario Mota has created a radiophonic piece using sounds recorded in the Metro and in Metrostations in Mexico City which is part of what Mota calls "an archeology of the soundscape of the city of Mexico".

Metro Indios Verdes was also produced by LEAS and was amongst the prize-winning pieces at the 2002 Radio Biennial in Mexico City.
