| Radio as a telecommunications medium plays an important role in the work of Robert Adrian X. He has newly conceived this live on air - on line - on site Kunstradio project, together with Norbert Math, for the exhibition at the Kunsthalle Wien (December 7th , 2001 to February 12th, 2002). [DEUTSCH] The project Radiation uses another aspect of media culture, i.e. the acts of transmission and networking. The point of departure for this project is the historical manifesto La Radia by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and Pino Masnata, which proclaims a media-based art of telecommunications, addressing the transmission of data rather than an "art of noise". La Radia will be transmitted in Morse code via short wave by Radio Österreich International. The processual project unfolds live between Zagreb (the on site location - Technical Museum, Zagreb as part of the exhibition "Broadcastingdedicated to Nikola Tesla" and Vienna (the live on air studio) and thus manifests itself simultaneously as installation, action, performance and collage. The piece is fed, above all by the heterogeneous acoustic material of short-wave radios, which - often used for espionage or propaganda purposes or by amateur radio enthusiasts - permit the reception of coded and scrambled and hence frequently unintelligible information, thus putting process before content. As an extension of an earlier version of the project (Ars Electronica, 1998), Radiation now opens up the possibility of feedbacks between and from different additional spaces and media. The construction of the project allows for the development of temporary situations of exchange between people and locations, reducing the artistic interventions themselves to a minimum: computer-processed samples of acoustic signals from short-wave receivers are amplified and played into the public space in Zagreb. Via microphones and a mixing console, which also permits local noises to be blended into the data flow, the sounds are streamed live on the internet and (also)received in Vienna. There at the radio studio, the material is mixed live according to criteria of sound-processing and broadcast on Kunstradio, so that the material can be picked up live on short wave (also) in Zagreb. The various signals - radio, live audio streaming and images from the live webcam - are juxtaposed to form a polysonic abstract space. The combination of different media, the interaction of different public spaces, the construction of situations in between different locations, remove the parallel flows of signals from their familiar contexts use them for the creation of a (meeting-) space: the initial material, the transmission ("radiation") and the reception blend into a simultaneous process. The interference between the stations creates new sounds that are, by all appearances, valid in their own right. Interlinked though, the different media and protagonists lose their unequevocality. F. Marinettis und Pino Masnatas Schrift "La Radia" gibt den Startschuß für das Projekt "Radiation" von Robert Adrian X und Norbert Math ab: Dessen Prämissen auf sich selbst anwendend wird das Manifest als Morsecode über den österreichischen Kurzwellensender ausgestrahlt. Gleichzeitig ist es ein programmatischer Bezugspunkt der Arbeit. Auch in "Radiation" geht es vor allem um die Übertragung sowie räumliche und zeitliche Ausdehnung (der "Radiation") von Daten, die uns permanent umgeben. "Radiation" ist ein Beitrag zur ersten umfassenden Retrospektive von Robert Adrian X in der Kunsthalle Wien. Es wird sich live zwischen Zagreb (als Aufführungsort) und Wien (als Ort der Studioproduktion) prozessorientiert "entwickeln". Durch die Konstruktion des Projektes werden, bei möglichst reduziertem künstlerischem Eingriff, kurzfristig mediatisierte Austauschverhältnisse verschiedener Orte und Personen hergestellt. Es speist sich vornehmlich aus dem akustischen Material von Kurzwellenradios, das - vor allem für Spionage- und Propagandazwecke sowie von Funk-Amateuren verwendet - hauptsächlich aus verschlüsselten und verzerrten Sounds besteht. Zusätzlich wird, durch die Verwendung des Mediums Internet und den Einsatz des Kunstradios als ein Knotenpunkt, die Möglichkeit einer Rückkoppelung unterschiedlicher Räume und Medien eröffnet. Das Zusammenspiel schafft eine Klanglandschaft, in der die ursprünglichen Radio-Signale verschoben, collagiert und montiert werden und Ausstrahlen und Empfangen zu einem simultanen Prozess verschmelzen. Indem die Arbeit von Robert Adrian X und Norbert Math Kommunikationssysteme besetzt und sich ihrer Technologien, Transfermöglichkeiten und Kanäle bedient, zeigt sie die Vernetzung von Medien und deren Umgang mit der Repräsentation und Transformation von Inhalten. "Radiation" verweist auf die Flut von Bildern, Tönen, Informationen - und ihrer permanenten Zirkulation innerhalb gesellschaftlicher Zusammenhänge. |
